Everyone who knows Lillian Veldeen Marshall loves her. She is a small-town matriarch of Westphalia, Michigan. Wife of over thirty years, mother of three, grandma, and winner of countless pie-making contests, her titles go on and on. Lillian’s love for her family is nearly rivaled by her passion for organization and structure. Upon finding out that she is terminally ill, Lillian sets out to write the lists and instructions her family and friends will need to live without her. The most challenging list materializes when she comes to the stark realization that Jerry, her loving husband of over thirty years will be alone after she’s gone. This inspires Lillian to swallow her pride and write a short list of women she approves of for him to remarry. What will Jerry do without her? How can he live in a world without Lillian? What will he do with Lillian’s List?

Lillian Marshall was loved by all and they came from miles around to attend her funeral after cancer took her from those that loved her most. In the wake of her death, her family must try to build a new life - a life without Lillian. But grief makes this task extremely difficult for everyone - some more so than others. Thankfully, they have Lillian's lists to help them along the way. The most intriguing list is one that contains the names of women that Lillian approves of for her husband; women that she has given him permission to marry.

Overall, Lillian's List has reminded me of just how frail life can be. In a moment's notice, it can be over. It also struck a very personal nerve because my mother was diagnosed with cancer. She's been gone now for more than six years.

There are so many beautiful things about this book: the writing is very flowing, descriptive and delicate. Lillian's willingness to push her husband into a life without her by suggesting women he can marry is also very beautiful.

On a quick side note, there were some things that I didn't like about the book that did not affect my rating. They are personal issues and I don't feel that personal issues should interfere with the book's overall rating.

I will say, however, that there is something I feel I need to point out about the book - it has a very strong Christian message. The beliefs of Lillian and her family are well aligned with the Christian beliefs and that's likely to be a sore spot for some readers. If religion bothers you, I'd suggest you skip the book. If, however, you can ignore it or your beliefs fall in line with the Christian beliefs, Lillian's List is a read I'd recommend.

Lillian List Bradley Salters 9781475102536 Books Reviews

I read this book over several days, reading a little during lunch hour and before going to bed. After Lillian was admitted to the hospital, shortly before her death, the story picked up for me and my interest grew from that moment.

The story tells of a woman whose family is left behind (after her struggle with Cancer) and how they struggle to pick up the individual pieces of their lives. The lists Lillian used to keep her life in order came in handy after her death as she left instructions and words of wisdom for her family and friends, including a list of women she thought might be suitable candidates for her husband to marry when his season of grief had passed. She could never have imagined how his life would unravel - until a rude awakening (in the form of an ultimatum) shook him to the core.

I enjoyed the story. I embraced the characters - faults and all. Because the daughters lived closer to their father, we get to know them better - especially Jenny and the events unfolding in her life. Although the story is not told in first person, it's as though the narrator is the husband and he could only speak of what he saw and heard. It would have been nice, though, to learn more about Lillian's sons and how they embraced life after their mother's death.

I really enjoyed the ending, too. It was nice how everything came together for good, after all the trials of life had passed. It certainly provides a glimmer of hope that life can be beautiful again, even after a tragic loss.
Lillian's List is a stunningly honest, bittersweet, and unapologetic look at the life of a wife and mother who leaves a gap in the lives of friends and family after she passes away from cancer. Her husband of thirty years, Jerry, is the primary griever. Lillian prepares for his grief by creating lists so he can manage life after her passing, including candidates for his remarriage! Additionally, the lives that Lillian has touched are examined, including the far-reaching aftereffects that her death has caused.

Author Salters explores love and grief from the angle of one who has experienced it. He creates the understanding that life must go on and that families and communities exist in order to pull together in times of celebration and crisis. His characters are finely drawn and detailed realistically, perfect in their imperfections. In Lillian's List, the reader has been given a lesson on the unselfish devotion that love should encompass, recounted with humor and passion.
Imagine a woman who is so in control of her life, even as she is dying of cancer, that she makes a list of suitable candidates to take over the care and feeding of her husband after she's gone. This is the premise of Lillian's List, and the author delivers on it.

Before she dies, Lillian has to show her doting husband Jerry how to work the coffee machine, how to make her special macaroni and cheese recipe, and how to clean the kitchen floor, among many other things. At first, I was thinking, how could any man be as helpless as Jerry? But after all, these people grew up in an age where men's and women's roles in the household and in life were more clearly defined.

One thing I loved about Lillian's List is that it continually surprised me. First we are treated to flashbacks Lillian is having in her final weeks, and these are portraits of the five women on her list for Jerry. The five women are just as different as five women can be, ranging from the warmhearted church pastor to the spinster librarian to the perpetual second place finisher in the local pie contest (Lillian always places first herself).

Once Lillian dies, Jerry is on his own, and the book takes on an entirely new dimension. Of course this is the story of Jerry choosing one of the women on the list, but he doesn't even read the list for months and months after Lillian dies. The author has created an entirely credible grief phase for Jerry, and the book becomes, rightly, Jerry's story. And I found myself getting more and more interested in how this old fellow who is so helpless without Lillian will cope with life on his own, with or without her famous list.

This book has a down-home flavor that reminded me of the best old Prairie Home Companion episodes. Church and faith and prayer plays a strong role in these characters' lives. Jerry's family is drawn with stark realism, as are all the characters in Lillian's List. I can only say I loved this book.
